Glass stairs and glass stair railings are a bold, contemporary design statement that opens up interior spaces, maximises natural light flow between floors and becomes the focal point of any modern home or office. Whether you need full glass balustrades or point-fixed railings, this guide covers everything.
Glass Stair Railing Systems
The most common approach is glass balustrades alongside a conventional stair structure (wood, concrete or steel treads). Glass panels are fixed using one of two main systems:
U-channel system: glass panels are inserted into a continuous aluminium or stainless steel U-channel fixed to the stair or floor structure. The most cost-effective and quickest to install. Gives a clean, minimal appearance.
Point-fixed system (spider fittings): glass panels are held by individual stainless steel point fixings or patch fittings. The glass appears to float with no continuous frame — the most refined aesthetic. More expensive and requires precise drilling.
Glass Stair Treads
Full glass treads are a statement design choice. Each tread uses laminated glass (typically 2×8.8 mm or 3×10 mm) with a sandblasted anti-slip surface on the top layer. This requires careful structural engineering and custom fabrication — we do not make glass stair treads; our work is the glass railing.
Toughened vs Laminated Glass for Stairs
For stair railings we use only laminated glass. Reason: stairwells are high-traffic, high-impact zones. If laminated glass breaks, it stays in place on the PVB interlayer — it does not shatter into pieces that could cause injury.
We don't use plain toughened glass for railings: when it breaks it crumbles and leaves an open gap, while laminated glass stays in place because the interlayer holds it.

The price depends on length, fixing system and stair design. As a reference: from €2,720 for a typical 3 m staircase / mezzanine railing with laminated VSG glass (Vilnius, installation included).
