VSG Laminated Glass vs Tempered Glass: Which for Stairs?

This is the most important decision for a stair balustrade. Tempered (toughened) glass is 4–5 times stronger than ordinary glass and shatters into small blunt fragments when broken. However, on a staircase, even small fragments falling away can leave a dangerous gap. VSG laminated glass consists of two glass plies bonded by a PVB interlayer. If broken, the pane cracks but stays in one piece — held together by the film. On stairs, this is the critical safety advantage: a broken VSG panel remains a barrier; a broken tempered panel may not.

Our recommendation: for stair balustrades, always use VSG laminated glass — 10+10mm (total 21.52mm with PVB) or 8+8mm as a minimum. We use only VSG laminated glass for stair balustrades — a broken tempered pane crumbles and leaves an open gap.
