How to care for glass structures: nano-coating, cleaning and longevity

The main enemies of glass: limescale and soap scum

Glass doesn't age on its own. But three types of dirt build up on its surface: limescale (from hard water), soap scum (from shower gel, shampoo and soap) and grease (from skin, hair and cosmetics). If left uncleaned, they bind into the glass surface microstructure and become almost impossible to remove. The goal is to prevent buildup, not to fight stains that have already formed.

Daily care (2-3 minutes after a shower)

After every shower, wipe the water off the glass with a rubber squeegee or microfibre cloth. This removes ~90% of moisture, which would otherwise dry and leave limescale spots. Best results come from working top to bottom in a single stroke.

Weekly cleaning

Once a week, do a more thorough clean with a mild glass cleaner. AVOID: ammonia (damages silicone seals), aggressive acids (ruin the nano-coating), abrasive powders (scratch the surface). Suitable picks: ammonia-free household glass cleaners (Cif Glass, Sano Window) or plain water with a few drops of dish soap.

Removing limescale stains (once they've appeared)

Home remedies work best:

  • Vinegar + water (1:1) — spray on, leave for 5 min, wipe with a soft cloth. Use white vinegar, not wine vinegar.
  • Citric acid — 1 teaspoon per 250 ml of water. Stronger than vinegar, suitable for old stains.
  • Specialist cleaners — HG Glass, CR Spotless, if home methods don't help.

Caution: don't leave acid on the glass for more than 10 min and rinse thoroughly with water. After cleaning, a common mistake is to leave the glass wet — always wipe it dry.

Nano-coating: what is it and is it worth it?

A nano-coating (e.g. RainX Glass, Anti-Spot) is a thin hydrophobic layer that makes the glass surface smoother. Water doesn't stick — it gathers into droplets and runs off, leaving fewer stains. Benefits:

  • Reduces limescale buildup by up to 70%
  • Less cleaning effort
  • Glass looks 'like new' for longer

It lasts 2-3 years (with daily shower use), then needs renewing. Price: €80-120 for a professional re-application (DIY — from €25 per kit).

Hardware care

Magnetic seals, hinges and tracks are the most sensitive parts of glass doors. Tips:

  • Clean the soft-close mechanism once a month with a dry cloth (no lubricants — they attract dust)
  • Wipe magnetic seals with a damp cloth, removing limescale (it blocks the magnetic contact)
  • Drain the water collected in the track after every use
  • Replace silicone seals when they start to yellow or peel away (on average every 5-7 years)

What to avoid

  • Strongly alkaline cleaners — they damage silicone
  • Scrapers and abrasive scrubs — they scratch the nano-coating and the surface
  • Stiff cloths (paper towels, coarse microfibre) — leave micro-scratches
  • Hot water for limescale stains — heat makes limescale less soluble; the problem worsens

FAQ

What degrades the glass surface fastest?

Hard water (>5 mmol/l), unsuitable cleaners and inconsistent daily care. Lithuanian tap water hardness averages 4-7 mmol/l, so without regular maintenance limescale builds up quickly.

Is it worth applying nano-coating if stains are already there?

No. First clean the glass thoroughly so no stains remain. Then apply the coating. A nano-coating on dirty glass locks the stains under the layer — they become unreachable.

How long does a glass structure last in general?

The glass itself (tempered, laminated) lasts 25-40 years trouble-free if it isn't physically struck. Hardware lasts 10-15 years. Seals (silicone, rubber) 5-7 years. With regular seal renewal and hardware checks, the structure serves for decades.
